This past weekend the members of the Hudson’s Hope Patrol, 4CRPG , Canadian Rangers conducted a GSAR exercise. The senario was that two hunters had traveled out into the wilderness and the vehicle that they were in had broken down and left them stranded. They then left their vehicle and tried to walk out. This is where the situation turns bad for our lost hunters.

The first night the hunters construct a makeshift shelter and are able to light a fire. The weather has in real life turned for the worst. The temperature is warm but the precipitation is switching between snow and rain.

The hunters awake in the morning to find that they can not find witch way they came from as their tracks are not distinguishable from wild animals due to the snow partially filling them in and the rain distorting the tracks. They decide to keep going to try and find help.

The search team composed of the rest of Hudson’s Hope patrol now are given the word that some hunters have become lost somewhere near the Johnston Creek and or Utah road systems. The setup camp and begin the search.

Great time and we learnt alot about GSAR. Thanks to Rng. Garner for the planning of this one.

This guy has an interesting view on the Occupy movement. He is right on some of his points, If it is happening everywhere then something has to be wrong!

This weekend 3 Rangers from 4CRPG Hudson Hope Patrol climbed Mt.Gething. Ranger Cushway, Ranger Garner and Ranger MacDonald.
It was a great climb and we made it to the top on Saturday at about 1430hrs. We then climbed back down to the treeline and made camp for the night. Sunday morning we climbed down the opposite side of Mt.Gething. On this patrol we marked our position every hour and also we sought out and marked all water sources that we could find on the mountain.

I am waiting for my new iPad to arrive. I think the most fun part of it has been watching the delivery online. It pretty cool to see your hardware come from China and make the trip to North America. Sometimes the product gets shipped to some obscure places.

I have been investigating primitive skills. I really believe everyone should invest some time into practicing these skills. Last night my wife and I went outside and practiced a scenario. We collected any wood matter that we could find and then used a flint and steel to start a fire to keep warm. I was challenging in some respects. It is very wet in our area right now and there is still a lot of snow so it was hard gathering dry fuel. It took two tries but on the third try I got it. I learned a lot from this simple exercise. It was definitely not in the worst case area but was challenging. Its her turn tonight!
